Research Services is pleased to announce the Mentored Grants and Summer Studentship Awards are now open for submission through the ROMEO Researcher Portal.

All applications must be submitted through the ROMEO Researcher Portal.

NOTE:  IWK Researcher is defined as meeting the following criteria:
1) Have a current appointment with the IWK MDSAS or staff position at the IWK; and
2) Have a primary research lab or primary clinical office at the IWK or conduct research at the IWK.

Mentored Grant – Deadline Monday February 5, 2018 12:00 PM

Aim: This operating grant is intended to i) support projects that will build capacity in research at the IWK, and ii) facilitate the development of the applicant’s research skills. Trainees, early career faculty, or clinical and administrative staff who are building research expertise are encouraged to apply. Evaluation of applications will be based on the quality of the proposed project and the likelihood that the mentorship relationship will lead to further skill and professional development for the mentee.

Funds available: $5,000 for 1 year

Eligibility: An IWK staff member, early career faculty member (within 3 years of faculty appointment), or trainee (e.g., resident physician, fellow, graduate student, undergraduate student, medical student, or clinician) who identifies an established IWK Researcher to serve as their mentor.

Summer Studentship - Deadline Monday February 5, 2018 12:00 PM

Eligibility: Students are eligible if they are currently enrolled in a university undergraduate program at the time of application, are supervised by an IWK Researcher, and not funded through the Research In Medicine (RIM) Program.

Upcoming Competitions

Research Services is pleased to announce the following upcoming competitions: Project Grants, Graduate Studentship and Postdoctoral Fellowship. See below for a summary of requirements.


Project Grants - Deadline Tuesday April 3, 2018 12:00 PM

Aim: This grant is intended to support projects that will position IWK Researchers to be more competitive for external funding or to complete high-quality projects of more limited scope that will have significant scientific or clinical impact. 

Funds available: $25,000 for 1 year (with 1 year no-cost extension)

The following types of applications will be accepted

  • Seed/Preliminary data. This study will provide preliminary data that will support an upcoming application for an external grant
  • New area. This study is in an area that is distinct from the applicant’s current area of research, and is not an incremental progression in his/her current research program. This study will provide the applicant an opportunity to explore a new area of research
  • Stand-alone project. This study can be completed within the allocated budget, and yield findings of sufficient originality and import to make an independent impactful contribution to the literature or practice.

Application Requirements:

  • Lay Abstract (750 Characters)
  • Scientific Summary (750 Characters)
  • Proposal (3 Pages)
  • References (1 Page)
  • Applicant CV: maximum of 5 pages


Graduate Studentship - Deadline Tuesday April 3, 2018 12:00 PM

Eligibility: A Masters or PhD candidate whose primary supervisor is an IWK Researcher. The applicant must be enrolled or accepted in a graduate program. Applicants are eligible for a second year of funding, provided they demonstrate proof of application to an external funding source during their first year.

Funds available (no match required):  $25,000/year for up to 2 years

Application Requirements:

  • Lay Abstract (750 Characters)
  • Scientific Summary (750 Characters)
  • Proposal (2 Pages)
  • References (1 Page)
  • Applicant CV: maximum of 3 pages
  • Supervisor CV: maximum of 5 pages


Post Doc Fellowship - Deadline Tuesday April 3, 2018 12:00 PM

Eligibility:  A PhD or resident physician/clinical fellow whose primary supervisor is an IWK Researcher.  Seventy-five percent (75%) or more of the applicant’s time must be spent engaged in research at the IWK. Applicants are eligible for a second year of funding, provided they demonstrate proof of application to an external funding source during their first year.

Funds available (no match required): $45,000/year for up to 2 years

Application Requirements:

  • Lay Abstract (750 Characters)
  • Scientific Summary (750 Characters)
  • Proposal (3 Pages)
  • References (1 Page)
  • Applicant CV: maximum of 3 pages
  • Supervisor CV: maximum of 5 pages


Further funding opportunities will be announced at a later date.

 

Note: IWK’s financial contributions for this initiative are subject to availability of funds.  Should our funding levels not be available or are decreased due to unforeseen circumstances, IWK reserves the right to reduce, defer or suspend financial contributions to grants received as a result of this funding opportunity.
