The IWK Auxiliary recently celebrated its 70th anniversary. Several special events were held throughout the year. Founded by a group of 22 women in May 1946, the Auxiliary has served as a source of volunteer support and as a major fund raising throughout its history.
Our major fund raising efforts are the gift shoppe, Biggs & Littles, and our annual fair, Kermesse. We appreciate the support of the greater IWK community and wish to remind you that funds raised by the Auxiliary are dedicated to supporting the mandate of this Health Centre.
Biggs & Littles
The Auxiliary has run an in house gift shoppe since 1970. The original shoppe was located in the main lobby of the IWK Hospital for Children and was a very popular destination for the local community. In 2005 the new shoppe, Biggs & Littles, opened in the Gallery of the Goldbloom Pavilion and is a wonderful place to pick up gifts, flowers, cards and other special items. Now our largest fund raising project the shoppe is operated by Manager, Lisa Mason, and a bevy of very dedicated volunteers. Visit us on Facebook for photos & sales news:

Kermesse 2019 Children’s Activities
The Auxiliary annually brings the IWK community together with its Kermesse fair. This event raises funds for IWK patient care and comfort items and programs - all while giving patients, their families, and the public a really fun experience!
This year Children's Activities (along with Silent Auction and Gallery Sales) again will be re-joining Flea Market and the Art Show and Sale in May! (In recent years, these components had been held in September). Everything this year will culminate in the fair's big day - Kermesse, Saturday, date in May to be determined soon!
Children's Activities will be taking place on the grounds of the IWK Health Centre (University Avenue), with some treats to be found within the IWK Gallery, such as candy, baked goods, and balloon sales. These IWK Kermesse events will take place from 10:00am - 3:00pm.
Last year's Children's Actvities included the popular trackless train ride, a bouncy castle on the grounds facing University Avenue, and many mini-carnival games within the IWK Playgarden. Families loved trying out our mini mini-golf course! Little ones won prizes at the fish pond and ring toss games, and enjoyed climbing around in the inflatable "Animal Farm." Then it was time to grab some popcorn and move on to the next games station - or the famous Teddy Bear Clinic. (The IWK Child Life team annually organizes this fun clinic where your child can bring their own stuffed animal - or pick one up there - for treatment and an X-ray. If your child's beloved bear, or other huggable toy, needs a bandage, the clinic volunteers will fix Teddy up!)
Last year, the Halifax Concert Band made us tap our toes in the Newman Gardens, and the Petting Zoo animals enjoyed the music, too!
For a change of scenery, you'll be able to visit booths inside the IWK Gallery, Richard Goldbloom Pavilion (University Avenue). And everyone should check out the annual fabulous Kermesse Silent Auction. In 2018, it was held inside the Women's Site building, IWK Parker Reception Room, and raised $4000 for the IWK Health Centre! The 2019 Silent Auction, date tbd, promises to be just as fantastic.
Kermesse 2019 Silent Auction
This year we are preparing for a fantastic Silent Auction! On Saturday, in late May (date tbd), you will be able to bid on many items, most likely in the IWK Parker Reception Room again (Women's Site, University Avenue) - each of them generously donated by businesses or individuals, some of them hand crafted!
Are you worried your children or teens will be bored at a Silent Auction? Not this year! Again, there will be entertainment in the Silent Auction room. Last year we had a very popular Photo Booth! Teens and their younger siblings had fun taking photos with the booth attendant while parents browsed our Silent Auction tables for treasures. The photos were available as lab-quality prints within seconds! The kids had a blast posing with the props, while parents bid on some amazing finds, among them:
- a gift certificate to daMaurizio restuarant
- a gift basket from Pete's frootique
- a day pass with cart to Avon Valley Golf Course
- an item from East Coast Lifestyle
- handmade Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy dolls
We plan to collect Silent Auction items just as fantastic as the above for Kermesse 2019!
Kermesse 2019 Online Auction - Plans Underway!
A new addition to Kermesse for 2018 was our Online Auction. Generously donated to the IWK Auxiliary (and available only for online bidding up to Kermesse day in 2018) was a VIA Rail Canada travel voucher for $1000.00! This travel credit was applicable on any trip on board VIA Rail Trains. Once the happy winner was confirmed, the IWK Auxiliary mailed his contact information to VIA Rail and they couriered the travel voucher to his home address. We hope to have the same or equally fantastic online auction prize for bidding again for 2019! We will again ask the winner to come to the Silent Auction (likely in the IWK Parker Reception Room) on Kermesse Day, May 2019 (date tbd), in order to confirm their prize and take some publicity photos. (Details will be arranged prior to Kermesse.)
We hope to share this amazing online bidding opportunity from a prize sponsor and the IWK Auxiliary again, all in support of a great cause! 2018 online bidding took place on ViewBid at:
