Ronald E. Smith
Ron Smith of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, is a highly experienced Corporate Director with an extensive background in finance, human resources and management consulting across a wide spectrum of industries and enterprises. He is respected by colleagues and associates for sound business judgement, reliability, decisiveness, strategic insight, analytical skills and the ability to work collaboratively in complex and changing environments.
Results driven and resourceful, Ron thrives on creative interaction in pursuit of meaningful and challenging objectives. As Senior Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer of Emera Inc., he had full responsibility for all financial functions for four years, which included direct responsibility for the management policies and oversight related to electric utility and fuel commodity trading businesses. For twelve years as Chief Financial Officer of MTT, a publicly traded telecommunications company, Ron oversaw all financial functions.
He currently serves on the Board of Alamos Gold Inc. as well as their merger partner AuRico Gold Inc., PRO Real Investment Trust and he is the currently Chair of the Public Service Superannuation Plan Trustee Inc. Previously Ron has served on the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board which manages $270 billion dollars of CPP funds. Ron served as Chair of the Acadia Board of Governors from 2004 to 2009 and is currently Chair of the Advancement Committee. Ron has served on Board and Audit Committees of seven Canadian public companies and numerous not-for-profit organizations over the past 30 years.
Karen Hutt is the President and CEO of Nova Scotia Power. Prior to her current role, Karen served as Emera’s Vice President, Mergers and Acquisitions and before that as their Executive Vice President, Commercial with Emera Energy.
Karen has close to 25 years of experience in marketing and sales, strategy, and business development. She joined the Emera group of companies at Nova Scotia Power in 2001 and has extensive experience across the organization.
Karen is an active supporter of local community. In addition to her role as Chair of the IWK Health Centre Board of Directors, she is a past Trustee on the IWK Foundation Board, Past-Chair of the Junior Achievement of Nova Scotia Board of Directors and a past Board Member of the Nova Scotia Arthritis Society.
Karen has degrees from Acadia University and Mount Saint Vincent University and recently completed the Directors Education Program through the Institute of Corporate Directors at the Rotman School of Management in Toronto.
Dr. Krista Jangaard
Dr. Krista Jangaard is the IWK Health Centre’s President & CEO. Krista first joined the IWK in 1996 in the division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. In 2008, she assumed the role of Medical Director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and in 2010 became the Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Division Head. In addition, Krista is an associate professor at Dalhousie University in the department of pediatrics and the department of obstetrics and gynecology.
Krista completed her medical training at Dalhousie University where she also later earned a Masters of Health Administration and was awarded the Glenn Moore Memorial Award and the Nova Scotia Association of Health Organizations Award for Academic Excellence. Krista is a mother of two, lives in Halifax with her husband and dog, and is an avid gardener.
Tracey is a senior public affairs and communications professional. She holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Cape Breton University and her Bachelor of Laws Degree. Following law school, she practiced in Sydney, Nova Scotia.
Tracey has worked directly for First Nations in Saskatchewan and Prince Edward Island. She was key in the implementation of the Mi'kmaq Confederacy of PEI, a tribal organization serving the two PEI Mi'kmaq First Nations. Tracey has served as Executive Director of the Mi'kmaq Confederacy of PEI and Senior Advisor to the PEI Mi'kmaq First Nations. She also worked as Vice-President of Stakeholder Relations and Communications for the Atlantic Lottery Corporation and recently joined the Mi’kmaq Confederacy of Prince Edward Island in the role of Rights Negotiator and Governance Advisor.
Tracey currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Board of the University of Prince Edward Island.
Chris Fowles moved to Halifax in January 2015 to open, manage and grow the Torys Legal Services Centre, the first of its kind in Canada. The LSC was established to provide Torys’ clients with essential corporate legal services on a cost-effective basis with a mandate to use technological and process innovation to deliver such services more efficiently and effectively. Fowles first joined the Torys LLP Toronto office in 1994 and was called to the Ontario bar in 1996. Early in his career, he also worked for two years in London, England and qualified as a solicitor with The Law Society of England & Wales.
Fowles enjoys mentoring and teaching and has taught a mergers and acquisitions course at Dalhousie’s Schulich School of Law.
Before working at Torys, Fowles completed a mathematics degree in actuarial science at the University of Waterloo and worked at a Toronto-based insurance company. He subsequently obtained an MBA from the University of Western Ontario’s Ivey School of Business and a law degree from the University of Toronto.
Sonya is managing partner at Ernst and Young Halifax and the Assurance leader for Atlantic Canada. She has 25 years of professional experience having lead and coordinated audits of numerous public and private companies located in Atlantic Canada and operating globally.
Sonya brings a depth of experience in addressing and resolving complex financial statements and accounting presentation and disclosure issues. Understanding issues relating to acquisitions is an area of her expertise. Sonya is currently a member of the Board of Directors for the Halifax, YMCA and a previous Council member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nova Scotia.
Dr. Paul Hong
Dr. Paul Hong is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery and the School of Human Communication Disorders at Dalhousie University. Dr. Hong graduated from the University of Ottawa medical school and completed his residency training at Dalhousie University in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He then completed fellowship training at the University of California-San Diego in Pediatric Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
He also has a Master of Science degree in Tissue Engineering from Dalhousie University. Dr. Hong returned to Dalhousie University as an attending surgeon at the IWK Health Centre with the Division of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in 2010, where he has been active in patient care, teaching and research.
As part of his role as the President of the MDSAS, to which he was elected by his peers, he fulfills certain administrative responsibilities including sitting as a non-voting / ex-officio member of the IWK Board of Directors.
Lynn Clark Irving
Lynn is currently working as an Internal Consultant in Disability Management, Health Employee and Wellness and Productivity Programs with Human Resources, Irving Health Sciences, J.D. Irving Ltd.,Saint John, New Brunswick. She developed a Corporate Wellness Model and led teams to design and implement Employee Wellness programs across the Irving Organization including: Health Initiative index tool for outcome measures, Employee Fitness Reimbursements programs, Health Risk Assessments, Smoking Cessation and Weight Management programs.
Lynn initiated and designed a Disability Management Information System which gathers, analyzes and generates management reports for Health and Disability costs and trends across the corporation. As Founder and President of Work Ready Professional Corporation, she was the architect of a new concept of occupational rehabilitation and hired and trained multidisciplinary teams of health care professionals to provide physicial therapy services to Worksafe, New Brunswick, doctors, lawyers and the general public.
In 2008, she was the recipient of the New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Foundation Excellence in Workspace Wellness Gold Award. Lynn is a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors.
Dr. Naeem Khan
Dr. Naeem Khan is chief of the Department of Diagnostic Imaging at the IWK Health Centre where he also continues to work as a staff pediatric neuroradiologist. He is also an associate professor at Dalhousie University in the department of radiology and Program director of education and training in pediatric radiology.
In addition to his IWK and Dalhousie appointments, Dr. Khan is the executive medical lead on the Provincial Diagnostic Imaging Program for Nova Scotia and has an active interest in QA and CQI and patient safety in Radiology.
His research, innovation and clinical interests include advanced neuroradiology applications Like functional MRI (fMR), Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) , nerve fiber tractography, MR spectroscopy, Magnetoencephalography(MEG), Use of Nano technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine. He has internationally collaborated and presented on epilepsy imaging, sports-related pediatric TBI imaging, and innovative approaches to forensic imaging and imaging autopsy. He is an active supporter of “imaging gently” “Imaging wisely” and “imaging 3.0” campaigns all of which has focus on responsible use of imaging and radiation protection.
Dr. Khan began his medical training at the Aga Khan University in Pakistan and continued with fellowships in neuroradiology and pediatric neuroradiology at Dalhousie University and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and has received certification of Royal college of Radiologists of Canada.
He previously served as chair of the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty Council at Dalhousie University as well as the chair of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology promotion committee. Dr. Khan is currently the chair of the IWK’s Medical Advisory Committee (MAC), a role he assumed in January 2019
Catherine MacPherson is a Certified Health Executive with the Canadian College of Health Leaders and has strong experience in the healthcare sector. She is currently the Director of Enhanced Care Operations with Shannex Inc. in Halifax.
Prior to her current role at Shannex, Catherine was responsible for the operation of Shannex’sCaritas Residence and the development of its academic nursing home partnership with Dalhousie University. She has also previously held program and project management positions in Nova Scotia’s district health authorities. Until 2016, Catherine was also a sessional faculty member in the School of Health Administration at Dalhousie University.
In addition to serving as a director on the IWK Health Centre Board of Directors, Catherine has previously served as Chair, Bluenose Chapter, of the Canadian College of Health Leaders and has recently been recognized for her contribution to the School of Health Administration through the Lawrence Nestman Outstanding Contribution Award.
Catherine holds a Bachelor of Health Science from McMaster University, a Master of Health Services Administration from Dalhousie University and is an EXTRA Fellow with the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement.
Jennifer Mills has a background in finance, human resources and operational leadership. Currently she is working with the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) as an Executive Advisor working with small to medium sized CEO clients to help them identify and navigate through opportunities for growth. Prior to joining BDC, Jennifer spent almost four years working with small, startup companies to help them grow, including True North Clinical Research and TruLeaf Sustainable Agriculture. Before this, Jennifer held the positions of Co-CEO and Chief Operating Officer at Precisions BioLogic Inc. and various executive roles with Ocean Nutrition Canada.
Jennifer’s volunteer and board work includes services as President and Treasurer on the board of Big Brothers and Sisters, and as a director on the boards of Junior Achievement and the YMCA. She is currently a national board member for the Kids Help Phone and serves on their Audit and Risk committee.
Jennifer holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Mount Allison University and is a chartered accountant with the Institute of Chartered Accountants.
Mike has over 25 years of senior management experience in the Telecom, IT Services and Electrical/Electronics Manufacturing sectors. As Chief Operating Officer at Nautel, Mike is responsible for the company’s broadcasting equipment and navigation-aid businesses and he plays a key role in the development and execution of strategies to grow the business into new sectors. Nautel is the world’s largest manufacturer of broadcast radio transmitters, having been founded 50 years ago in Hackett’s Cove Nova Scotia. Today the company employs more than 230 people in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Bangor, Maine and Cornwall, Ontario. In addition to the broadcast transmitters business Nautel is a significant player in navigation beacons, SONAR, eLORAN and other special purpose radio transmitters. Prior to joining Nautel Mike held leadership roles at Seaforth Energy, Cobham Tracking & Locating, Aliant, and Andersen Consulting.
Over the years Mike has been involved in a number of not-for-profit and charitable organizations including Board of Directors membership at Mermaid Theatre, The Maritimes Energy Association, and Sail Nova Scotia.
Originally from Eskasoni, Kara Paul works in communities across Nova Scotia promoting Dalhousie University and the wide range of educational opportunities available for students. She is currently the Program Manager for Dalhousie’s Aboriginal Health Sciences Initiative (AHSI), overseeing and teaching in the Success Program.
In addition to her teaching and administration roles, Kara also has an interest in research and has presented her work and shared her perspective at the Atlantic Aboriginal Post-Secondary Conference, the International Meeting on Indigenous Children’s Health, the Knowledge Translations Forum, and the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation.
Kara holds a Bachelor of Science from Dalhousie University and a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Psychology from Acadia University. She has been recognized with many accolades and awards including the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation Scholarship and Bursary, the Leonard Denny Memorial Award.
Lois has significant clinical and business development leadership experience in public and private healthcare organizations with a solid understanding of public policy and government relations. She is recognized as a pioneer of telehealth services and is a founding member of several national and international organizations with responsibility for telehealth service and professional standards and networking.
Lois has been a recipient of several awards for leadership within the nursing community, including Canadian Nursing Association's Centennial Award and Nursing Association of New Brunswick's Nursing Administrator Leadership award.
Lois has many years governance experience on not-for-profit boards, agencies and crown corporations, including Economic Development, Post-Secondary Education and the National Research Council.
Robbie Shaw is retired after a busy career in both the private and public sectors, and leadership positions in many community and national organizations. He graduated with a B.A. from Queens University and a LLB from Dalhousie Law School. In the private sector, he held senior executive positions in a number of companies including National Sea Products (now High Liner), Clayton Developments Ltd., Nova Scotia Power and KPMG L.L.P. He also served on the Board of Directors of a number of Canadian companies including London Life, TD Insurance and Intertape Polymer Inc.
In the public sector he served as Principal Assistant to Premier Gerald Regan, Vice President, Finance and Administration of Dalhousie University and Vice President of the Nova Scotia Community College. From 2006 to 2011 he was CEO of the IWK Health Centre Foundation.
Robbie has been has been on the Boards, and often as Chair, in a wide range of community and national organizations including the Waterfront Development Corp, Metro United Way, John Howard Society, Halifax YMCA, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, The Urban Development Institute of Canada, The Institute for Research on Public Policy, the Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation and the IWK Health Centre Board of Governors.
Robbie has been named as One of Atlantic Canada’s Top 50 CEOS three times, and was honoured by Canada’s Public Policy Forum for his active involvement in public affairs. He is married to Jean Shaw who also served on the IWK Health Centre Board, in the 90s. They have three children and seven grandchildren.
Paul Smith is a partner in the Saint John office of Stewart McKelvey and practices primarily in areas of corporate law, trusts and pensions. He is regularly consulted on issues of corporate and pension governance and assists pension plans within Atlantic Canada and in the rest of Canada in connection with their investing activities.
Paul has drafted and contributed to public and private statutes relating to corporate and trust matters as well as pension governance in New Brunswick and elsewhere. Additionally, Paul is ranked among Lexpert’s Best Lawyers in banking and finance, corporate law, securities law, private funds law and trusts and estates.
He is currently a member of, and previously was chair of, his firm’s partnership board.
Paul completed his Bachelor of Science degree in math and physics in 1984 and obtained his LL.B from the University of New Brunswick in 1987. He was admitted to the New Brunswick Bar in 1988.
Thane Stevens is a professional engineer who along with his brother, currently own and operate the Stevens Group of Companies whose head office is located in Dartmouth, NS. Thane’s career includes extensive experience in both construction and construction supply industries with special emphasis on all facets of construction that pertain to concrete. He currently is responsible for the overall direction of this group of companies which has operations in the Atlantic provinces as well as a construction company based in Raleigh North Carolina which services the southwestern U.S.A.
Thane oversees all new business for the Group which has grown to a volume of $100 million in 2015 from $50 million in 2007. The Stevens group is also involved in the long-term health care sector, commercial real estate and the development of a new and innovative Nova Scotia company that is bringing sustainable salmon to market using technology leading land based total recirculation facilities.
Thane graduated from Acadia as a University Scholar and from the Technical University of Nova Scotia as a Sexton Scholar.
Cheryl is an experienced executive with a proven background in building and delivering strategic initiatives, partner engagement and capacity building. She holds a Master Degree in Public Affairs and has been recognized as an effective relationship builder, communicator and team builder who can rapidly identify next steps, execute strategic plans and affect positive change in diverse environments.
As the Associate Vice President of University Advancement at Mount Saint Vincent University, Cheryl was responsible for broad fundraising strategies and provided strategic leadership for all aspects of advancement encompassing alumnae and community engagement, fundraising and stewardship. She provided leadership and strategic direction to the advancement team with strong emphasis on the Harvard Strengths model of teambuilding.
With a substantive background at the federal government level, Cheryl served as a Director of Parliamentary Affairs, Minister of State for Public Health, Senior Policy Advisory, Cabinet and Legislative Affairs in the office of the Prime Minister. At the municipal level, Cheryl was a Campaign Director in a successful mayoralty bid and served as Principal Advisor, Transition and provided leadership on transition efforts.
Cheryl has a significant portfolio of community involvement and currently serves on the Nova Scotia Council on the Status of Women and has served on the United Way Board of Directors and Strategic Plan Committee, Board of Directors, Halifax’s Mayor’s Economic Council and was named by 21 Inc. one of the Top 50 Atlantic Canadian Emerging Leaders under 35. She is currently with the Nova Scotia Community College as a Senior Consultant and will oversee the assessment program and market opportunity on a global, national, provincial and regional scope.
Kevin Stoddart is a Managing Partner of Knightsbridge Robertson Surrette where he is responsible for leading executive search projects as well as providing direct oversight for Meridia, the firm’s full service recruitment company.
In addition to his roles with Meridia and executive search, Kevin is involved in firm-wide management and leads business development and marketing initiatives for Knightsbridge Robertson Surrette under four practice areas: executive search, contingent recruitment, career transition and human resource consulting.
Kevin is also an active leader in the community having supported many organizations over the years. In addition to his service to the IWK, Kevin previously was a member of the Board for United Way of Halifax for over 10 years, where he served as Chair for two years.
Kevin holds an MBA from Saint Mary's University Sobey School of Business. He is also a Certified Management Consultant (CMC) and an active member of the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD).
Dr. Darrell White
Darrell White is a Professor of Medicine and Senior Associate Dean, Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University and a Hematologist at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre.
He has been a member of the Division of Hematology, Department of Medicine at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Center in Halifax since 1998. Darrell’s research interest and clinical practice focus on transplant and non-transplant treatment of multiple myeloma. His administrative experience includes being past program director for adult hematology and core internal medicine.
Darrell is an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for Hematology and Internal Medicine, the Chair of the Royal College Specialty Committee for Hematology.
Darrell is a graduate of Dalhousie University Medical School. He trained in internal medicine at the University of Western Ontario and in hematology at Dalhousie University. Darrell completed a fellowship at the Myeloma and Transplantation Research Center at the University of Arkansas and completed graduate studies in community health and epidemiology at Dalhousie University.
A well-respected leader, Catherine has a track record of achieving results by building teams, creating and communicating vision, forging partnerships, and meeting critical challenges through transformational change.
Catherine is currently an Associate within KBRS's consulting practice and part-time faculty in the Department of Communications Studies at Mount Saint Vincent University.
Catherine began her career with the IWK Children’s Hospital where she held progressive roles before accepting a secondment as Acting Chief of Protocol for the Province of Nova Scotia. Following this, she became Director, Corporate and Public Affairs for Maritime Life Assurance Company and was later appointed Vice President of Human Resources for the organization. She then served as the President and CEO, Halifax United Way for 10 years before taking on the role of Deputy Minister, Department of Business, Province of Nova Scotia.
An established community leader, she was recognized as Women of the Year by Leger Marketing Halifax poll on community impact, one of the Top 50 CEO’s in Atlantic Canada by Atlantic Business Magazine, and a Woman of Excellence by Halifax Progress Club. She is also a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
